It was Nat’s birthday and about 26 colleagues, friends, children (no dogs) gather at the train station in Bad Godesburg for a day hiking in the vineyards of the Ahr Valley along the "Red Wine Path." The day is perfect weather - cool, sunny with the bluest sky ever. The vineyards cover the terraced slopes of the valley, some so steep it’s hard to imagine how they care for the vines and harvest them without falling down the sides. The Red Wine Trail takes us up the slopes, above small villages, around curves, always surrounded by the vines. Along the path are a few ‘tasting stops’ where for a few Euros you can taste the freshly made wine which is more like sparkling grape juice as it hasn’t fermented fully yet - very tasty!
We reach the restaurant after a couple of hours walking and all have good appetites. Sitting on the restaurant patio out of the sun with the cool wind, we wait for some warm and hearty food. The kids all go and play while the adults sample the wines and chat... The food arrives and it’s hot - my potato soup warmed me up all over, but Billy’s mushrooms with cheese, noodles and sauce was a real winner!
We walked down the hill and over to the next train station - having a birthday cookie, wishes and song along the way.
A great day of companionship, families and beautiful terrain.
