New Years Day - Pine Valley with the Green Mountain Club (microspikes) It was a nice way to start the new year, hiking in the woods with friends.
Jan 2 - Grafton Park late afternoon hike (microspikes) We didn't get to use our headlamps, but still a nice hike meeting new people.
Jan 4 - Woodford State Park on snowshoes with John Around the campsite loop roads make for great hiking.
Jan 7 - Mount Anthony with Tim Bushwacking around to find new areas of our closest mountain.
Jan 12 - Learning about Animal Tracks at Grafton State Park We learned about and saw different animal tracks from an enthusiastic, super-knowledgeable docent. He showed us where a fawn had laid down while the rest of the pack of deer stood watch and then made us smell deer pee - who could have imagined that it smells just like very fragrant pines! It was COLD with not moving around much but very fun!
Jan 13 - Woodford lake and forest (snowshoes) This was a snowfall that created a fairy-like land of snow. Walking across a frozen lake is still very new to us, but tracks proved that others had gone before us and not broken into the lake!
Jan 15 - Woodford around the lake and beaver ponds (snowshoes)
Jan 17 - Taconic Crest to the Snow Hole from Route 2 (microspikes) Another beautiful day! This one included some messages for Flint's 4 year old birthday.
Jan 24 - Robert Frost Trail A close, easy trail near a lake and through a forest, ending at the Robert Frost home.
Jan 26 - Grafton Lake Festival How do you describe a crazy snow festival where people swim into icy waters when the air temperature is 20 degrees!! They had to chop a large area out of the ice, then there were people guarding the area in dry-suits to assist if anyone got into trouble. There were also all kiinds of activities related to snow and ice - snowmobile rides, games for kids, ice fishing and much more.
Jan 26 - Peace Pagoda On the way home from the Grafton Lake Festival we stopped by the Peace Pagoda. This beautiful building is out in the middle of nowhere! There are about 80 peace pagodas around the world dedicated to fostering non-violence in our world today.
Jan 29 - Tibbets State Park (microspikes) We had passed a sign for this trailhead along the road and wanted to return. It's a good hike through a wooded area.
Lovely church - we've taken photos in all seasons. The contrast of the different skies is striking.
Feb 3 - Mahican Mohawk Indian Point with Kate (snowshoes) The ice is on the side of the road around the hairpin turn on Route 2 - there must be minerals in the water that produce the colors?? Wow - this was a tough hike - very steep, narrow and hard to find footing. I went down much of the trail sliding on my butt!
Feb 10 - Berlin Mountain (microspikes)
Feb 11 - Cheshire Cobbles (microspikes) A nice easy hike with a view of the valley and Cheshire. From the vista we saw a car drive out onto this frozen lake, so we went down to the lake after the hike. Seems so strange to us to see cars driving across lakes!
Feb 13 - Mile Around Woods (microspikes)
Feb 16 - Busby to Spruce Hill (snowshoes) A cloudy day with beautiful light and dark in the sky.
Feb 17 - Road Walk with GMC
Feb 19 - Woodford to Dewey Road with Ham and Lorna (snowshoes) Across the frozen lake, through the woods and over the beaver ponds!
Feb 21 - Meadow Mountain Preserve in Williamstown (microspikes) Not a lot of elevation gain through meadows and forests.
Feb 22 - Woodford State Park (snowshoes) We had to go back to the park to retrieve Billy's scarf. Someone had found it, tied it to a tree and then sent a notice to Front Page Forum about where it was! It was nice to get it back as it is one that my mom knitted.
Feb 27 - Woodford Loop (snowshoes) Roger is visiting and it a COLD day with temps in the minus numbers, but layering up it's fine in the woods. He was anxious to try out new boots and snowshoes.
