We loved our 10 day hiking adventure along the "Lycian Way" in Southern Turkey on the Mediterranean Coast. The Lycian Way is a 540 km, 29-day way-marked footpath around the coast of Lycia in southern Turkey, from Fethiye to Antalya. The trail consists mainly of Roman roads, old footpaths and mule trails. Lying between the coast and mountains, it often has steep gradients. It was researched, designed and waymarked by Kate Clow, a British/Turkish amateur historian, in 1999. Turkey’s first long-distance walking route, it was made in order to identify and protect some of Turkey’s old roads. So how do you find your way along the trail? Well, we had a PDF with trail directions, which at times was helpful, and the trail is marked with red & white paint markings along the way on rocks, trees, etc. Sometimes there would be many markings along sections of the trail where it was impossible to get off the trail, and then on other sections we would come to an intersection with no markings... The only thing to do then, was to travel down each branch until you found a confirming mark.
We used the company "Middle Earth Travel" for this tour and were very pleased with them. They made all the transportation arrangements, each night's accommodations, all meals including a sack lunch each day, luggage transfer each day --- so we only had to carry a day pack while hiking - very nice!!! It was really convenient to pay one fee and then never worry about money along the journey. The people we stayed with were all very friendly, the food was local and fresh and in large quantities - even with hiking each day, I don't think we lost any weight on this vacation :-) https://www.middleearthtravel.com
